Founded in 1968, Meals at Home dba Meals on Wheels Northeastern Illinois’ mission is to foster health and contribute to individual well-being and independence by delivering nutritious meals, medically prescribed diets, and providing other supportive services to the home-bound elderly, disabled, and others temporarily unable to care for their nutritional needs.

With a powerhouse movement of roughly 800 volunteers who assist in meal preparation and packaging and delivery of meals (Monday through Saturday, including holidays and inclement weather) to clients living in communities north of Chicago to the Wisconsin state line, MWNEI serves a rapidly growing client base which is expected to serve more than 1,000 clients in 2023.


Reporting to and in partnership with the Executive Director, the Development Director will lead development efforts as Meals on Wheels Northeastern Illinois (MWNEI) continues to grow.

The Development Director will have the opportunity to build the development department with the initial focus on major gifts and grant writing. Additional responsibilities include:

Develop/Enhance the Donor Base

  • Build and execute a campaign to be launched in Fall 2022 to fund the creation of an additional food production facility in Lake County. This goal and timeline to be determined by the Development Director and Executive Director.
  • Design and supervise an annual signature event held the first Friday of May.
  • Design and supervise an all events which may include a speaker series and/or donor and volunteer appreciation luncheons.


  • Design a Development infrastructure tailored to the needs of the organization.
  • Recruit, hire, on-board and supervise a development team over the course of the next three years.
  • Manage development software, data entry and gift processing
  • Develop and track grant proposals and reports for foundation and corporate fundraising
  • Track in-kind donations including volunteer hours and donated items and report the value monthly to our bookkeeper.
  • Submit weekly giving reports to the Executive Director.

Donor Relations/Marketing

  • Design and manage social media campaigns to expand the online audience of supporters.
  • Assist the Executive Director and board in the recruitment of new board directors
  • Remain knowledgeable of program happenings, and share stories with donors and community members.


  • Further develop and execute MWNEI’s fundraising plan and map the next plan.
  • Assist the Executive Director with donation projections and department budgeting Qualifications
  • Experience in a lead role in the Development Department of a social services agency, with a professional background that includes events management, grant writing, marketing and communications, and annual fund management and major giving.
  • Supervisory experience and strong ability to support and mentor staff
  • BA (required), MA (desired)
  • 10 plus years experience in development is desired
  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and communication skills
